Abby Black, our new Principal French Horn
by Neil Kimel

When did you start playing the horn and where did you study?
I began playing the horn in fourth grade. My school didn’t offer horn as an option, so my parents bought me the cheapest single horn on eBay and told me I had to stick with it until at least eighth grade.
Throughout high school, I played extensively for Jon Boen (retired Lyric Opera principal horn), who was an incredible influence on me. His kindness, patience, and musicality were tremendous motivators, and I feel deeply fortunate to have learned from him. I earned my undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music. I returned to Chicago for graduate studies at DePaul University, where I had the privilege of learning from many members of the Lyric Opera Orchestra. I played three seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, then spent two seasons with the New World Symphony. I’m thrilled to be back in my hometown, joining the Lyric Opera Orchestra.
Did you ever come to Lyric Opera when you were younger and if so which opera(s) did you see? Do you have a favorite memory?
Being from Chicago, I came to Lyric often and really idolized the orchestra. Two productions I especially remember were Elektra and Lucia di Lammermoor. I love Strauss, the horn parts are incredible, and it was so much fun to see and hear the Wagner tuba section. I took my dad to see that opera, and he still talks about all of the stage blood.
I usually like to research an opera or listen to excerpts before attending operas, but with Lucia, I went in completely blind and was blown away by the drama. During the mad soprano aria with the flute duet, my jaw was on the floor. It was unforgettable.
How does it feel now, sitting in the pit leading the horn section?
It’s absolutely thrilling, there’s so much adrenaline every time I sit down in the pit. The members of the section make it so easy. Coming into a section that I grew up listening to and admiring doesn’t leave any room for hesitation or ambiguity. It pushes me to rise to their level every single night. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a supportive section.
Returning to Chicago, what are you looking forward to being around again or frequenting?
I love walking along the lakefront and exploring different farmers' markets and festivals. I also love going to concerts. Chicago has such an incredible classical music scene. It seems like every week, a different friend or colleague is playing somewhere, and I look forward to hearing them and supporting them outside the opera house.
When you're not playing the horn, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not playing the horn, I enjoy crocheting and spending time with my cats, Jiji and Dora.
