When Lyric Opera Orchestra violinist Peter Labella and his wife, horn player and frequent Lyric sub Melanie Cottle, discovered 3 kittens in their tool shed, they knew the stray mom might not return if they allowed their curious grandchildren to play with them. Despite that, the wary mother moved two of the tiny babies away but never returned for the third. Pete and Melanie have lovingly nursed the newborn along with bottles of kitten formula every two hours (yes, all through the night). Little Emmy is named for Pete’s grandmother. They share a birthday!
